A recent survey of 1,528 human resource professionals shares that 96% of companies conduct background checks during recruitment. This search allows us to verify the candidate’s address as noted on their resume and/or paperwork. Cross referencing can also aid in uncovering aliases and additional addresses.
Bankruptcy / Insolvency Search
This determines whether the candidate has ever declared bankruptcy or was ever insolvent.
Criminal Search (Canadian Standard)
All Canada wide criminal record checks are conducted through CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) and are based on name(s) and date of birth. Results provide existing adult criminal charges for which a record suspension (formerly known as a Pardon) has NOT been granted.
Criminal Search (Canadian Premium)
In addition to the standard search, a local police database search for information reports on pending charges, warrants, judicial orders, peace bonds, etc. A “YES” or “NO” response from a Premium Search determines whether further inquiry is warranted. (IE: a positive “YES” response suggests there may be a charge pending.)
Criminal Record Check (U.S.A.)
A US criminal (name and DOB) will search for records in current (or previous) states of residency covering numerous demographic sources. This search also includes The Department of Corrections, Federal Bureau of Prisons Records, and US district court filings.
Criminal Record Check (International)
In addition to offering criminal record searches in Canada and the US, we are able to complete them in most International Countries.
Credential verification determines if the candidate has the necessary qualifications, whether they are valid and current for employment and compliance purposes as claimed. Access to governing institutions, qualifying bodies, exam boards and databases will determine whether disciplinary action was taken and their membership status within the organization is up-to-date.
Credit Check / Inquiry
A Canadian Credit Bureau inquiry provides you with an applicant’s address and employment history, credit worthiness, an indication of legal items, bankruptcies and collections registered against the candidate. The Credit Inquiry serves to indicate the candidate’s fiscal responsibility and debt load.
Commercial Vehicle Operator Record
Similar to a drivers abstract, a CVOR indicated the status and class of the driver’s license, along with providing a 5-year record of collisions, safety-related offences and inspections relating to the driver while operating a commercial vehicle.
A driving record search will validate the current driver’s licence status, class, driving offences, restrictions, suspensions and demerit points for drivers transporting goods, who use a company vehicle or represent your company while on the road. Exceptions to access: Alberta and B.C., USA, and some international countries.
Education Verification (Canada)
Education verification serves to verify the applicant’s highest level of education directly from the Registrar, Student Record Offices or Authorized Data Sources. It serves to reveal fraudulent documents (transcripts/diplomas) and misrepresentations of facts. It exposes candidates who by all description unaccredited.
Education Verification (International)
We also work with international education institutions in over 160 countries to verify international education drawing the same results as mentioned in Canadian verification.
The most common areas of ‘embellishment’ are dates of employment, omitted employers, titles, salary and job description. CIS will verify that the Employer is legitimate, whether a reference used is authorized to speak on the company’s behalf and provide a comprehensive narrative.
Gathering post-employment feedback from an employee about their employment experience is a valuable tool to determine your company’s strengths, weaknesses and to gather unrealized insight into policies, procedures and personnel.
Litigation Record Search
Civil, Small Claims, Court of Appeals, Federal and Tax Courts from any court across Canada. Search requests will be referred to our Investigation Division who will contact you directly for specific search details that you require.
Public Safety Search
A name search of several Watchdog Group directories in Canada and U.S. that identify individuals, groups or entities considered anti-social I.e. involving terrorists and narcotics.
Reference Interviews (Employment)
Trained in behavioural interviewing techniques, your candidate’s references confirm and share their experience regarding performance, personality traits, strengths, weaknesses and past disciplinary issues. Questions asked are focussed on your candidate’s past history in order to predict their future performance. Results are unbiased, unvarnished and accurate.
Reference Interviews (Controlled Goods)
Similar to Employment Interviews for Controlled Goods Compliance, with fewer questions focussed to ascertain the employee’s level of trustworthiness.
This search will confirm the validity of the social insurance number that the candidate has provided, aids in uncovering attempted identity theft as well as verifies the candidate’s Citizenship or status in Canada.
Social Media Search
Through performing a comprehensive search of a candidate’s online prescience by utilizing various social network sources, CIS is able to determine if a candidate publicly exhibits discriminatory, criminal, derogatory, or anti-social behaviour that may negatively affect an organization and cause the employer to further investigate the candidate.
WHO PAYS FOR THE BACKGROUND VERIFIED® SERVICE?
The Job Seeker pays CIS directly or their Employment Specialist who submits the request to CIS for investigation.
AS A JOB SEEKER, WHAT CONTROL DO I HAVE OVER MY BACKGROUND RESULTS?
Once the results are provided by CIS, they cannot be changed. A Candidate will not have access to edit or change any part of the results provided. If the Candidate does not like the results, they may elect not to share them with anyone and opt-out from using the Background Verified ® logo on their resume or job search documents.
WHAT BACKGROUND SEARCHES ARE RECOMMENDED TO BE VERIFIED BY CIS?
The Candidate can select from a variety of background check packages. CIS recommends that they put theirselves in the Employer’s role and ask what best serves their “need to know”. It is best to review all options with CIS or the Employment Specialist as all industries require different checks.
AS AN EMPLOYER, WHAT IS THE PROCESS IF I NEED MORE INFORMATION ON MY CANDIDATE?
CIS will provide the Employer with a Release of Authorization Form for the Candidate to sign and it needs to be returned to CIS with your request to complete the required investigation.
HOW LONG ARE THE BACKGROUND VERIFIED® RESULTS CONSIDERED CURRENT?
Background Verified® reports are dated when the search takes place. It is up to an Employer to decide if the report is current enough and meets their hiring standards. On average, proof of education and employment references have a longer shelf-life compared to a criminal record and credit check. If an updated search is required by an Employer, CIS will complete this at any time for an Employer with permission from the Candidate.
